Yun Brocade
Yunjin, known as "the clothing of heaven," is the forerunner of China's premium luxury goods. The craftsmanship of Yunjin in Nanjing, China, dates back to the Eastern Jin Dynasty (circa 317 AD). Ancient Chinese described Yunjin as "jadeite and gold threads, woven into the emperor's garment," a line of poetry that captures its luxury and nobility. Yunjin was not only a high-end custom for royalty and aristocracy, but in ancient times, 500 grams of Yunjin was worth the equivalent of 12 ounces of gold, hence the saying "an inch of brocade is worth an inch of gold." Weaving a single 8-inch piece of Yunjin requires not only exceptional aesthetic taste but also significant human, material, and time resources. Simple Yunjin takes approximately 13-15 days to weave, while complex Yunjin can take anywhere from two months to five years. In 2009, it was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity under the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.
